Chigborough Farm Halloween Maze
The Maze at Chigborough
Anyone who has camped at Chigborough will know that we have a wonderful 6 acre dragonfly shaped maze adjacent to the campsite. In the summer months this provides hours of fun for the many families who come to stay with us - its free for anyone who is staying here.
In October however, the maze takes on a completely different feel when it is turned into our Scare Maze for Halloween.
2026 Is the 5th Year the Spooky Maze has been running, so here’s a bit of the history…
My Dad, David, had grown many different crops on the field that is now the Campsite (called Piggery field as Chigborough used to be the home to a pig farm) It was always a struggle to make a return from arable farming as the land had been reclaimed after gravel extraction by the previous owners, which left us with our beautiful lakes.
When we bought the farm in 2011 we knew we wanted to share it with other families and friends and we formulated a plan to offer some glamping and camping accommodation for guests. However Piggery field was just over 5 Hectares (A Hectare is approx 1.5 Football Pitches) so we knew that it was far too big to be a campsite. Paul decided that a Miscanthus Maze would be a great addition to the farm.
Miscanthus is a hardy perennial Grass which grows in dense, thick clumps up to 10 feet tall. It can live for over two decades without any fertiliser. This is ideal for beside the lakes as we dont want any fertiliser run off which can lead to excessive weed growth in the water.
We don’t, but the maze can be cut and sold as a biofuel or animal bedding.
The miscanthus crop was planted in 2016 and then designed, mapped, marked out and sprayed off in a dragonfly design using GPS in 2019. Our children Pippa and Henry visited a maze with their Grandparents one summer and this led to them enthusiastically making plans to spook friends in our maze at Halloween. From this the maze has evolved…
Halloween themes
We have a huge amount of fun planning the Halloween maze, usually starting to enthusiastically chat about the following year over our weekly Breakfasts in The Farm Cafe from the moment we’ve finished putting the props away!
Our first year saw a spooky soft launch.. with friendly witches, spooky ghosts and the odd chainsaw later in the evening!
2022 - Year one.
In 2023 the maze became a little more scary with witch doctors, an operating theatre, undertakers and a child catcher! As well as all the usual favourites of scary scarecrows and a graveyard.
A growing cast in year 2!
Year 3 saw the maze being taken over by pirates and a huge pirate ship being erected in the centre of the maze. This was the brainchild of Sue (one of the maze directors) who we have to keep under control as she has an amazing imagination!
The Blackwater Pearl
Look out for the pirates!
Last year in 2025 we had a spooky mad hatters tea party with many sinister versions of nursery rhymes. Ring o ring o roses, Little Red riding hood, The lion the witch and the wardrobe, incy wincy spider, The three little pigs and Jack and the beanstalk to name a few.
2025 Saw the mad hatter and friends come to Chigborough.
Alice in a spooky wonderland
